It has been informed through a historical investigation into the techniques, philosophies and contexts underlying artificial voice synthesis over the last 300 years. This was supported through related enquiries into the physics and physiology of voice production. A parallel line of research focused on auditory perception and the rich range of expressive potentialities of the human voice.These threads of explorations were integrated along the dimensions of "physiology", "physics" and "perception." These themes were visualized as the three axes of a cube in the Euclidean space. Visual mapping techniques were borrowed from the practices of qualitative research to define the characteristics of these axes and to plot the various voice-artifacts onto this emergent framework. The interactions were designed so that the modes of accessing knowledge were non-linear and open for individual engagement and interpretation. role in using electricity. With the advent of the smart electrical grid, they would be able to adjust their use of electricity in accordance with the accessibility of environmentally friendly energy sources. The project ‘FlexibEl’ intends to understand how this experience of shifting one’s domestic electricity activities could be made more meaningful. The main goals have been: communication to the users about (forecasted) times best suited to energy consumption; behavior change of the users towards adopting a more flexible energy consumption pattern; and users’ access to planning tools that would help them organize their activities in environmentally responsible ways. The courses of action have involved a series of brainstorming sessions, concept development phases, workshops &amp; user tests and an iterative creation of prototypes of varying fidelities. The outcome of this process has led to the concept of ‘Peace Time.’ Instead of asking people to refrain from engaging in certain activities during ‘bad’ electricity times, it uses a positive motivational trigger by provoking them to take a break! It encourages them to spend this time outdoors or in other activities that would bring them closer to nature (and to themselves). The design, consisting of a bird nest and associated birds, incorporates a multi-sensory approach: the chirping of the birds from different corners of the house would alert the users about the onset of 'Peace Time'; a (natural) smell of their choice would fill up the room to set the mood; and the nest would slowly come down - the distance travelled by it would indicate the duration of the 'Peace Time.' It helped users to meet each other and explore books that other people own so that they can meet in real life, trade real books, and foster real relationships with likeminded book-lovers.The app holds a user’s “bookself,” or an in-app bookshelf that contains the titles of every book the user adds and wishes to trade for something else. The user can either seek out a book that belongs to someone else and initiate a match, or wait for someone else to find their book and do the same. There were many migrant workers and daily-wagers, sex-workers and orphan children who were facing threats to life and liberty. This initiative was an attempt to help them with at least one critical need – food safety. We created a platform to leverage the untapped potential of citizen change-makers to help with the crisis. We enabled them to reach out to their networks and communities and aggregate charitable donations that could then be directed towards purchasing food for distribution. Taking our heritage forward&nbsp; Taj Ganj, part of the Taj Mahal UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built at the South Gate of the monument in the 17th century to house the Taj Mahal’s builders. Today, Taj Ganj lies in ruin as the result of corrupt governance, a lack of basic infrastructure and destructive tourism practices. The Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Tourism consulted the National Institute of Design to investigate how the Taj Mahal’s South Gate could be made more accessible to tourists, and how the experience of Taj Ganj could be improved for its visitors as well as its resident community. This research aimed to understand the social, cultural and physical workings of Taj Ganj and to frame recommendations towards planning for an improved visitor experience to benefit the local community and to protect the living cultural heritage of Taj Ganj. The Taj Ganj Report was used as evidence in Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court of India to demonstrate nontransparent planning practices by local and central governing agencies.Our field research aimed to develop an understanding of the space and community of Taj Ganj as well as the complex relationships they share with each other. Our goal was to generate a design brief through a participatory process between Taj Ganj residents, traders and their associations, researchers and government agencies. The hand-manipulated processes of the potter’s wheel were abstracted into simpler movements, which could then be translated into the robotic manufacturing process. The robotic technology combined with digital scripting tools was then used to expand the form-generation capabilities of the pottery-making process. This merging of techniques not only introduced novelty in terms of forms but also made the structures more amenable to mass production. Mechanization of these manufacturing processes has allowed for speeding up the pace and the scale of manufacturing. The stages of manufacturing entailed a combination of analog and digital methods - involving the processes of extrusion, rotation, robotic carving, firing and assembly. The pieces were shaped into slightly varying configurations of spiral forms. A mirrored aggregation method was developed to allow for lateral bracing of the individual columns with those that were adjacent to them. One of the manifestations of the power-play lies in the differences between the observer and the observed, the active and the passive. Many individuals who identify as women and/or LGBTQ+ have felt their bodies get scrutinized by an unwanted/intrusive gaze.&nbsp;Taking inspiration from Laura Mulvey’s conception of the cinematic ‘male gaze’, this project has materialized in the form of a gaze machine – a pair of disembodied eyes (along with the third eye of the camera) that gazes back at someone looking at them. The intention is to use humor and provocation to disrupt the power dynamic of the gendered gaze. This gaze machine is currently embedded in a handbag and can be extended to other accessories like the cap, the belt or the bag pack. Each of them will have a different connotation in action. Further work would involve taking the gaze machine to different contexts– from the overt to the covert and from being gender-centric to being surveillance-centric.
